Uphill Golf Tournament

Wednesday, August 2, 2006 @ 10:38 pm by Sofie Hofmann

We just got back yesterday afternoon after a long weekend in Obergesteln. Hub took a day off on Monday, as Tuesday August 1 is Swiss National Day. We left Weggis past 7:30am on Saturday morning, July 29, 2006, as I needed to tee off at 11:10am and Hub at 11:30am. We joined the Hallenbarter AG sponsored golf tournament af Golf Source du Rhone.

It’s already normal that after the tournament, winners will be awarded. The winners were announced and awarded at 6:30pm, and after that, dinner was served. After dinner, later that evening, we were approached by M if we wanted to join the so-called Uphill Golf Tournament to Hungerberg on Monday, July 31, 2006. I never heard about it but saw the pictures. It looked fun and we thought that it would be an experience if we join them.

Start, near the Skilift Station in Oberwald

We played golf on Sunday, and on Monday, we joined the Uphill Golf Tournament or “Hang-Uf-Golf-Tournier” going up to Hungerberg, where Hungerberg restaurant, owned and managed by Brigitte and Hubi Fux and Family, the tournament sponsor, is located.

I just wore my golf shoes and Hub wore his biking shoes while the others wore their trekking shoes. It was spontaneous on our part so we didn’t have any preparation at all. It was not a regular tournament, it was just organized for fun, for variety and for a change. We just needed one club and three balls to be able to participate. There was only one hole and it was located up in Hungerberg.

It was, of course, an uphill battle as Hungerberg is 1780 meters high above sea level. Hungerberg is part of Oberwald in Obergoms, Valais, and Oberwald is 1380 meters high above sea level.

It was indeed a nice experience. I enjoyed it. For one thing, I won the tournament, with 24 strokes, breaking last year’s record of 27 by Rolli. Siege had lower strokes but he ran out of balls just about 40 meters from the hole so he did not finish the game. Lucky me! I just had a good day. I won a gift certificate for Hungerberg restaurant, a free lunch for two persons inclusive of one free bottle of wine. Isn’t that great?

Just to add, on our last day in Obergesteln, on August 1, Swiss National Day, we joined the Shotgun Golf Tournament at 6am, as in 6 o’clock in the morning. We played nine holes only. Golf Source du Rhone is always organizing the Shotgun Golf Tournament on the Swiss National Day, and we see to it to participate even if it’s so early in the morning.

What’s so nice about it? Everybody brought something so everybody got a prize. The winner had the privilege to chose first among the prizes. After getting the prizes, we had a good breakfast buffet. It was really fun!
