Our Vacation in Mallorca, Spain

Monday, March 12, 2007 @ 7:10 pm by Sofie Hofmann

We had our vacation in Mallorca a few weeks ago. Mallorca, a popular tourist destination, is the largest island of Spain. It is part of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea.

La Seu Cathedral in Palma, the landmark of Mallorca

It was already late in the afternoon when we arrived in Mallorca on February 17, 2007. We just took the rental car and went straight to Cala Millor which is at least an hour drive from the airport through Carretera de Palma-Manacor via Villafranca. But it took us more than an hour to reach Cala Millor because we drove via Llucmajor, then Campos, then Felanitx, then Manacor, then Son Servera to Cala Millor. We arrived safe in Cala Millor and checked in at Hotel Hipocampo Palace.

The next day, Sunday, we went to Porto Cristo, then we drove up to the north side of Mallorca. We went to Canyamel Golf, went to see the Lighthouse at Punta de Capdepera in Cala Rajada, and then to Port de Pollença. We ate at the restaurant called Real Club Nautico Porto de Pollença (RCNPP). One thing nice about the restaurant, if you order dessert, they will bring you the cart, not the menu card, with the desserts. You can choose immediately and get your dessert right away.

The island of Menorca, also part of the Balearic Islands, can be seen from Punta de Capdepera.

The next two days, we played golf at the Canyamel Golf Club, and at the Capdepera Golf.

On Wednesday, as we wanted to drive along Serra de Tramuntana, we left right after breakfast. We drove to Pollença via Manacor, then Santa Margalida, then Muro, then Sa Pobla, also dropped by Club de Golf Alcanada. Then, we drove from Pollença to Sóller along Serra de Tramuntana.

We especially drove up to Sa Pobla, instead of via Arta to Alcudia which we did on Sunday, hoping that we will see a lot of windmills. It was written somewhere that Sa Pobla is the land of the windmills. It was disappointing because what we saw were just “Ruins of Windmills” as Erich called them. If you would like to see windmills which are still functioning, you better go near the Palma airport, and you will find a lot of them there, but sorry, I can’t exactly tell you what street. You will also see a lot of windmills along the highway, again, near Palma airport, at the Palma de Mallorca area.

Serra de Tramuntana from Pollença to Sóller is quite rocky. I even called that particular area the “Rocky Mountains of Mallorca”. The area from Sóller to Estellencs is quite different especially from Deia. What we saw from Deia to Estellencs, all along Carretera de Estellencs/Carrera d’ Estellencs, is the nice view of the ocean. We continued driving up to Andratx, and then to Palma. We dropped by ArabellaSheraton Hotel Golf Son Vida in Palma just to see the place, and then back to Cala Millor.

The next day, Thursday, we played golf at Club de Golf Alcanada located near Port d’Alcúdia.

On Friday, before we left for Palma, we went for a short walk at the Cala Millor Bay. Cala Millor Beach is a popular swimming destination in Mallorca. There were no people swimming in the area yet because it was still a little bit cold in Mallorca during the month of February.

Few minutes after 11 A.M., we left for Palma to visit some friends who have been living in Mallorca for almost 20 years already. We had lunch at Minimar restaurant in Es Portitxol Palma. Afterwards, we went around the city of Palma. Palma, also known as Palma de Mallorca, is the capital of Mallorca.

On our last night at Hotel Hipocampo Palace, we watched Bee Gees Fever Live in Concert. The performers were good, I just forgot the name of the group.

Bee Gees Revival Show

Our vacation was not really about culture but it was just all about sightseeing and playing golf.

We left for Switzerland the next day.

TIPS:
Hipocampo Palace has good breakfast and dinner buffet. I was eating fish almost every night. They already have prepared food to choose from but you still have the option for fresh fish or meat, and then they will fry them in front of you. You just have to wait for a few minutes.

Minimar restaurant, with address Vicari Joaquim Fuster, 67, in Es Portitxol Palma has good food. I really recommend that you visit that restaurant if you are in Palma de Mallorca.

The golf courses are really being maintained and with nice panorama, some holes with terrific ocean views. As usual, each one of them has a different character. The par 4’s for ladies are quite long, most of them are more than 300 meters but quite challenging too.

Ola Sofie! Sorry I’ve not visited in awhile…alam mo naman maraming kung anu-anong drama sa buhay.

I’m bawled over by your pix. Fantastic! Mallorca looks absolutely stunning. I’ve never been to mainland Spain, nakakahiya mang aminin, although I had a taste of Ibiza last year and LOVED IT!

Dapat pupunta sana kaming Andalucia this April, drive through Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba…bumili na nga ako ng 2 guides (isang driving at isang rough guide) and was really really looking forward to exploring, soaking up the culture and of course the FOOD. (kunyari lang yung culture!) Kaso, naiba ang takbo ng hangin…we will be going back to Turkey, may matitirhan na nga naman kase. Might as well take advantage while they’re not sold yet.

Anyway, join ka ba samin ni Atinna in April? I’m meeting up with her in Amsterdam…join ka na!

    Ola pinay in barnsley!

Oks lang, ngayon lang din naman ako nag-update… tagal nga e…

Masaya ang bakasyon sa Mallorca. Imagine, no computer, no emails kami, kahit na may WiFi Connection sa hotel.

Sabi niya, good sign, meaning, I was relaxing daw.

Oy, maganda pala yong area niyo sa Turkey a. Enjoy it habang nandyan pa…

    Amsterdam? Hmmm… we’ll see…

    Kataw,
Viva Espana! Love it! Love it! Wish to go back to Spain and explore more cities like Mallorca. We certainly had a memorable stay when we were there at places like Pamplona, Marbella, Monzeratt, Angora (the shopping place) Granada, Sevilla, Madrid and quiet places like Cerdanya, Rhonda, Mejas. I forgot the other small towns.
I just happen to open this today. I’m glad I did.
