Boracay Island White Sand Beach

Wednesday, June 18, 2008 @ 11:58 am by Sofie Hofmann

Boracay island has been voted as the best beach in the world a long time ago. I can’t give you any reference as it was the time when there was no internet yet as far as I can recall. Now a days, it’s still being considered somehow as one of the best beaches in the world.

Boracay Island White Sand Beach

Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan, Philippines

In April 1990 to May 1990, I had my practicum at the Lorenzo Beach Resorts in Boracay. I certainly had a lot of fun in Boracay that made me to frequent the island since then, at least once a year. For one thing, Boracay is just 30 to 40 minutes away from my hometown.

I remember that in 1990 the road from Kalibo to Caticlan was still a rough road. People were flying to Kalibo, most of the time, then travelled by land to Caticlan, then by boat to Boracay island. The route to Boracay is still the same, of course, but the road now from Kalibo to Caticlan is all concrete. The Caticlan airport already existed even before 1990 but only small planes were flying there, unlike now, where it can accommodate at least a 50-seater plane.

A lot of things have changed in Boracay. In 1990, there were not too many tricycles yet. We normally just walked from one place to another. The main road where the mini-cabs and tricycles are using now used to be too small. It was not the vehicular main road then. Boracay was like a private resort although there were already a lot of beach resorts, not a lot of concrete buildings though. Most of the cottages were made of native materials such as bamboos and nipas.

Bazura and Beachcomber were the popular hang-outs during the night. Bazura doesn’t exist anymore but Beachcomber is still there. Lorenzo South Resort and Fridays Resort were two of the popular beach resorts as they were front beach resorts. Lorenzo Beach Resorts (Lorenzo South, Lorenzo Main and Lorenzo Grand Villa) were sold this year and the resort name had been changed. Fridays is still there but it already had changed ownership as well.

The Tourism Center didn’t exist then. There were really no shopping areas, and no “Talipapa” (small market). Now, there’s D’Mall, and a new “Talipapa” as the old one which existed after 1990 got burned. There were no jetty ports in Boracay and Caticlan only small boat stations on the white beach area.

Boracay became so popular as a local tourist destination in the Philippines among the Filipinos, and not to foreigners only. The footpath near the beach (Beachfront Path) where no cabs and tricycles are allowed can be so crowded especially during summer unlike in 1990 where you can still count how many people were walking.

yes. I heard that from news in tv and talk shows that Boracay is the best beach in the world. I’m glad that we have something to be proud of.
Nice photos. Another nice fun with your relatives. Wala yata si hubby.

Mmm… You just made me even more tempted to go there…. The food looked delicious too - I’m drooling over here :-)

I’ve already heard sooo much about it and I wanna go there and especially take photos. We both love to go on photo walks.

It’s definitely a paradise island, just like our summer paradise is over here in Sweden, that we visit every summer. Our friends that lives there, travels to Mindoro (and sometimes Boracay) every year, so it’s from there we got most of the information we know.

Reminded me of the good old days during our summer stay… has it really been that long time ago? Parang kailan lang … i remember, merong maliliit na tindahan where i bought my earrings. Di ba dun kami sa north nila Lucille? I remember the 2nd time I went there after our practicum was with you as well and I think we stayed at the north end kaya maganda k’se we had the beach to ourselves. I was just actually looking at one of our pictures a while ago k’se inaayos ko yung mga matagal ko nang di nagagalaw na boxes dito hehe… sige sa uulitin, bumabagal yung laptop ko kaya i need to download cleanup sw pa …
    kisses to erich!

    Hello nanaybelen!

Boracay is really something to be proud of but… I have to really say but here… with the commercialization, it’s slowly losing its natural beauty. I don’t mind if a lot of people are going to Boracay, that’s the way it is. Everybody would like to experience Boracay as well. My concern is, a lot of concrete buildings are being constructed. Sooner or later those bamboo and nipa cottages will be replaced with concrete ones. But the white sand beach is still inviting. :)

    Have a nice week po!

    Hello Lifecruiser!

Despite the changes in Boracay, it is still very inviting. Don’t mind the buildings though, its not that much yet, but compared to 1990, of course, it was really very different.

May I suggest then. Please take time in finding a resort, and really know what you want. Some people get disappointed when they arrived there because they want to be in a quiet area and yet they stayed in the middle of the White Beach in Boracay. If you like night life and shopping, and don’t mind the noise and crowd, that’s the area. :) If you stay at the end of the White Beach, walking for 3-4 kms is necessary if you decide to at least go around and see where the action is. :)

    Have a nice week!

    Hello Jennie!

    Kumusta ka na darling?

Oh yes, we really had fun, as in FUN! :D Nakakamiss talaga. Miss na rin kita. :)

I wanted to post our pictures in 1990, unfortunately, I don’t have them here. I don’t even remember where did I put those pictures. I had very few kasi e.

Anyway, have a nice weekend dear! Regards sa lahat! Mwah!

hay, sarap ng boracay talaga! i know what area you are talking about na medyo malayo sa crowd, that is where we stayed, we stayed near friday’s dati, nung ang kuryente e bilang na bilang lang sa gabi, hehehe. kumbaga sya na yung dulo kaya medyo tahimik sya. hala, continue with more photos :D

    Hello Kengkay!

    Have a nice weekend!

    Hi Sofie,
    Kisses to Erich again.

    Hello Jen!

Naku yang pagkukuha ng pictures sa golf course, dapat pag naghihintay ka lang ng turn mo kasi it could cause delay, magagalit yong mga nakasunod. May golf etiquette dear, may golf etiquette. :)

    Hi Justice!

I heard nga that it was so crowded in Boracay noong Holy Week!

Pero alam mo, I rarely swim in Boracay. I just would like to enjoy the scenery. :)

    Hi Renny!

    Well, Boracay it is!

Extremely different from the place you just visited, I suffered a little bit from heat, and you were enjoying the cold and snow. :) Great adventure you have there, by the way!

Why don’t you go scuba diving when you’re not doing anything. But wait, is that a good place to dive? :)

Well, I met you in Boracay in 1990. Did you go ever back to Boracay after 1990?

Nice of you to drop by!
