Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail

It has been quite some time since I wrote about our vacation in Scotland in July 2008. There are a few places more worth to blog about, and so, I am continuing it now.

It was on July 14, 2008 when we left St. Andrews, the Home of Golf, and went to Inverness via Cupar, Perth, A9 and A95 highways, then Glenlivet, Aberlour, Craigellachie, Rothes, Elgin, Forres, and Nairn following the Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail.

We could have continued following A9 going to Inverness but we diverted to A95 and followed the Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail which is the only malt whisky trail in the world. Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail is in the Speyside region properly known as Strathspey by the River Spey.

There are several whisky distilleries in Speyside but only 8 distilleries and a Speyside cooperage form the Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail. Among the 8 distilleries that form the Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail, we only went to The Glenlivet Distillery and Glen Moray Distillery. We also went to Cragganmore Distillery which is not part of the Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail but is located on the official Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail.

First stop was at The Glenlivet Distillery located at the Glenlivet Estate, Glenlivet, council area of Moray in the Speyside in Scotland. The Glenlivet Distillery is the first licensed distillery in the Highlands of Scotland. According to The Glenlivet Distillery, “George Smith transformed the precarious practices of the illicit distiller into a whisky-making dynasty that would set a standard for all others to follow.”

The Glenlivet Distillery was founded by George Smith who combined innovation with entrepreneurial flair. George Smith was a man of vision, and he made his whisky a household name, and incomparably one of the finest and best malt whiskies. The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are the two best selling single malt whiskies in the world. But The Glenlivet is known as “The single malt that started it all”.

Second stop was at the Cragganmore Distillery located on the banks of the River Spey, village of Ballindalloch in Banffshire in Scotland. But the distillery was closed so we just continued our trip from Ballindalloch to Aberlour to Rothes, and eventually we arrived in Elgin.

Third stop was at the Glen Moray Distillery located on the banks of the River Lossie, city of Elgin, council area of Moray in the Speyside in Scotland. Glen Moray is a classic Speyside single malt whisky used to be owned by Glenmorangie Company Ltd. Glenmorangie is also a distillery that produces single malt Scotch whisky. In 2008, Glenmorangie Company Ltd sold Glen Moray to La Martiniquaise.

We only visited the whisky distilleries and bought a few things but we did not drink any whisky as we were traveling on our own by car going to Inverness. For one thing, I do not drink whisky. After visiting the whisky distilleries, we continued our trip to the city of Inverness, the capital of the Highlands region in Scotland.
